About the game

Bid, take your tricks, dodge the bags. Partnership Spades on a 3D table.

The classic partnership card game, dealt on a table you can actually see.

You and your partner bid how many tricks you think you can take, then try to make it — no more, no less. Overtricks become bags, and ten bags cost you a hundred points. Bid Nil for no tricks at all, or call Blind Nil before you have seen a single card when you are far enough behind to need it.

Spades renders a real three-dimensional table in software: cards have thickness, catch the light, and drop shadows onto the felt. There is no game engine underneath and nothing to download — the whole game is one file, and it never touches the network.

• Standard partnership rules, played to 500 (or 200, or 300 — your table) • Nil and Blind Nil, scored properly, with the bag penalty • Table Setup: target score, bag limit and penalty, Nil values, sorting, hints • Three opponent skill levels • Touch, keyboard or gamepad • Eleven languages • Works with no connection, ever

How to play

  1. Four players in two partnerships: you and North against West and East. A 52-card deck is dealt out evenly — 13 cards each. There are 13 tricks in every hand.
  2. Before play, each player predicts how many tricks they will take. Your partnership contract is the sum of the two bids. Bid Nil to promise you will take none at all.
  3. The player left of the dealer leads. You must follow the suit that was led if you can. If you cannot, play anything — including a spade. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick unless a spade is played, in which case the highest spade wins.
  4. Spades cannot be led until they have been "broken" — played on a trick where a player was void in the suit led — or until spades are all you hold.
  5. Make your contract and score ten points per trick bid, plus one point for each extra trick (a bag). Miss it and you lose ten points per trick bid.
  6. Bags accumulate across hands. Reach the bag limit and your team loses a block of points and the bags reset.
  7. A successful Nil scores a bonus for your team; taking even one trick loses the same amount. Your partner still plays their own contract. Blind Nil, bid before you look at your hand, is worth double — offered only when your team is well behind.
  8. Camera button (or C): switch between the Table, Seat and Overhead views.
