About the game

3D alpine ski racing with one finger: carve, tuck and pass every gate. A 36-level Tour on six mountains, an endless Gauntlet, and slalom to downhill against named racers.

Airporio Downhill Skiing is 3D alpine racing you play with one finger. Slide left or right to carve, let go and your racer drops into a tuck, pull back to check your speed. Pass every gate between its poles: miss one and you are disqualified, as in the sport.

The Tour is 36 levels on six mountains, each with its own snow and light: hard pack in the sun, blue ice in the cold, soft snow under a snowfall, flat light under cloud, floodlit ice at night and a high face at dusk. Every mountain has a training run against the clock, a tight-line slalom, a super-G speed trap, a giant slalom race, a two-run slalom with the times added, and a downhill final against a field of named racers. Earn up to three stars a level. Then the Gauntlet: stage after stage against a clock that keeps tightening, with three lives and no last stage.

Underneath is real skiing. Gravity pulls along the slope, a tuck cuts the wind and is worth about 40 km/h, the edges hold only so much and less on ice, tight turns cost speed, and the rolls throw you into the air. Your racer is a full 3D athlete in race gear who angulates into every turn, plants a pole, absorbs the bumps and throws the skis sideways to stop. The other racers ski the same courses through the same controls.

Quick race in slalom, giant slalom, super-G or downhill on any mountain. Four camera views starting from behind the racer, a line on the snow to follow, a ghost of the racer to beat, split times, an Alpine polka with its own Music button, and eleven languages. One self-contained file with no network requests, so it plays offline at 38,000 feet.

How to play

  1. The race. Start at the top, pass every gate between its two poles, and cross the line as fast as you can. Red and blue gates alternate. Miss one, or let a pole pass between your skis, and you are disqualified: that is the rule of the sport.
  2. Turn. Press anywhere and slide left or right (arrow keys, or a controller's left stick). The skis carve harder the further you slide. Start each turn early, above the gate, so you are already coming back as you pass it.
  3. Tuck. Let go and the racer drops into a tuck: much less wind, much more speed, but only gentle turns. Any real turn stands the racer up again. With Skiing set to Manual you tuck yourself by pushing up.
  4. Check your speed. Pull down (or the down key) to stand up and let the skis drift. Do it before a tight set of gates, not in it.
  5. Camera. The camera button (or C) changes the view: behind the racer, close behind, from the helmet, or high and wide.
  6. Sound. The music button (or N) turns the music on and off; M turns all sound off.
