Vietnamese five-in-a-row on squared notebook paper: hand-made X and O tokens, twelve animal rivals, four computer levels, solver-made puzzles, a 12-lesson tutorial and precise placing on a phone.

Cờ Ca Rô is the squared-paper game every Vietnamese schoolchild plays: take turns putting X and O in the squares and be the first to line up five. The Vietnamese rule adds the twist that makes it a real game of tempo: a five does not count if your opponent has a mark at BOTH ends of it.

Play on a notebook page with a red margin and a blue cloth cover, on a sidewalk cafe table with iced coffee, a phin filter, pens and paper lanterns overhead. The marks are hand-made lacquered X and O tokens (or glossy stones, or pen ink), and the board can be a notebook, wood, bamboo, lacquer, a chalkboard, do paper or a blueprint. Choose 15 x 15, 19 x 19 or a 9 x 9 board for kids.

Climb the Ladder through twelve animal rivals from Hanoi to the Mekong, from Cu Gau Truc the panda to Thay Trau the old buffalo. Four computer levels use real threat-space search and a forced-win solver, so Master punishes a loose three. Hints explain the move, undo is there when you want it, and a threat helper can show where a five might appear.

Twelve short lessons teach squares, fives, the open three, why a four must be answered, the Vietnamese blocked-ends rule, double threats and defence, all with real taps. The puzzle book is machine-composed: the game's own solver found each forced win and proved it. Switch rules for free-style gomoku, exactly five or Renju restrictions, with an optional swap opening.

On a phone the whole board is on screen at once: tap to preview your mark in a magnifier, nudge it with arrows, then confirm. Twelve languages, controller and keyboard support, and everything runs offline in one file.

Cách chơi

1. Marks go inside the squares, like X and O on squared notebook paper. The standard board is 15 x 15. 19 x 19 is for long games and 9 x 9 is the kids' board.
2. X moves first, then O. On your turn you place one mark on any empty square. Marks never move and are never taken.
3. Make an unbroken line of five or more of your marks: across, down, or along a diagonal.
4. A line of five does not count if the opponent has marks at BOTH ends of it. One open end is enough to win. That is why you keep your lines open and block theirs at both ends.
5. An open three (three in a row with both ends open) turns into an unstoppable open four next move, so it must be answered. A four forces the opponent to block its last open end at once.
6. Two threats at once win: a double three, a four and a three, or a double four. The opponent can stop only one of them.
