About the game

One question, up to six carved stones, and a clock that keeps getting shorter. A night terrace of standing stones, and a quiz that expects you to know things.

Fourstone is a quick-fire quiz played on a lit stone terrace at night. A question stands above the stage and the possible answers are cut into standing stones in front of you — V-cut inscriptions, read the way a real one is, by the shadow in the groove rather than by paint. Two braziers light the terrace; a colonnade and an escarpment stand behind it.

Answer fast and the question is worth up to three times its value. Answer slowly and it is worth its base. Get it wrong and you pay three quarters of whatever you were holding — so snapping an answer you are sure of is correct, and snapping one you are not is expensive. That is the whole decision, and it is the difference between a careful player and a quick one: measured over twenty runs at identical knowledge, careful play scores about forty per cent more.

Nothing stays where it started. The clock closes on its floor, a fifth and a sixth stone rise, the wrong answers stop being the obvious ones, and the number puzzles keep growing without limit. Five right answers in a row buys a life back, so a good run lasts long enough to meet all of it.

Three camera views, and the game remembers which one you chose: the terrace, a close view down among the stones, and a view from above that keeps a six-stone board readable. Touch, keyboard and game controllers all work; the camera is on the dock button, the V key, or the View button on a pad.

102 hand-written questions plus procedurally generated number puzzles, all translated into eleven languages. Plays entirely offline with no accounts, no adverts and no in-app purchases.

How to play

  1. A question appears above the stage. Each stone carries one possible answer — tap the one you think is right.
  2. The ring counts down. Let it run out and the question counts as missed, so answer before the light fades.
  3. The sooner you answer, the more it is worth — up to three times. A wrong answer costs three quarters of the same stake, so answer fast when you are sure and spend the clock when you are not.
  4. A wrong answer or a timeout costs one life. Lose them all and the run ends — your best score is kept.
  5. Nothing stays where it started. The clock shortens, a fifth and a sixth stone rise, and the wrong answers stop being obvious.
  6. Tap the camera in the corner, or press V, to move between the terrace, a close view among the stones and a view from above. Your choice is remembered.
