About the game

Real 3D pickleball: swing the paddle with a stick, measured ball physics, full rules, opponents from 2.5 to 5.0

Pickleball at an indoor club (or outdoors, when there is a breeze), rebuilt from scratch. There are no shot buttons: you swing the paddle with a stick, and how you swing decides the shot - brush up for topspin or a lob, cut down for a slice, a gentle push for a dink or a drop, a fast flick for a drive. The ball flies the way a real one does, with drag through its holes, spin that curves and kicks, and a paddle whose weight, stiffness and grip change what comes off it. The official rules are all there: side-out or rally scoring, 0-0-2, the two-bounce rule and the kitchen, judged by your feet. Play singles or doubles with a computer partner against opponents rated 2.5 to 5.0, each with a style and moods of their own. Enter an eight-player tournament, practise with a ball machine, watch any rally again from five cameras, and read a coach's notes on what cost you points. Your rating, level and fitness grow as you play.

How to play

  1. Pickleball is played to 11, win by 2. Only the serving side scores.
  2. Serve underhand, diagonally, past the kitchen line. The ball must bounce once on each side before anyone volleys it.
  3. The kitchen — the zone next to the net — is no place to volley from. Let the ball bounce there, or step back.
  4. Swing the paddle. The right stick is your paddle hand (on a touch screen, flick the swing pad; with a mouse, drag on it and let go; on a keyboard, the arrow keys). There are no shot buttons: the swing decides the shot.
  5. Up brushes up the back of the ball: topspin, and a lob if you go strongly up
  6. Down cuts under it: slice and backspin; down hard on a high ball is a smash
  7. Gently is a dink or a drop; fast is a drive
  8. Timing is everything: swing so the paddle meets the ball as it reaches you. Early pulls it across, late pushes it wide, and both cost pace. A full, flat swing can sail long; brush up and the topspin brings it down.
  9. Camera: the camera button (or C) cycles broadcast, behind your player, first person, side and overhead views.
